Coed Varsity Swimming · Girls & Boys Win CIF Swim Championship

MESSAGE FROM HEAD SWIM COACH DARLYS ANKENY:

We had a very exciting finals at CIF on Friday night. Here are some challenges and highlights we faced.

The meet started out with the 200 Medley relay, our girls fought a good fight only to be disappointed that instead of winning they were disqualilfied for an early takeoff. This was not want we were anticipating and it very well could have ended our quest for 1st. The girls bounced back after this disappointment as true Champions do! I could not be prouder of them and how they handled this setback.

Then the boys raced the 200 Medley relay and broke the CIF Division 4 record that they had set at Prelims on Wednesday with a time of 1:34.57! This performance is also a new DBHS Record crushing the old record of 1:36.97 from 2017. Congratulations Nathan Chow, Kevin Vargas, Vincent Cheng and Tim Jia.

Then we started the individual races beginning with the 200 Freestyle. Kate Li finished First with a personal best time of 1:52.36 becoming our first Individual Champion of the night. We had four boys in this event with Dylan Hou finishing 2nd with a time of 1:41.62! Nathan Chow 4th (1:42.02), Matthew Chai 6th (1:49.48) and Stephen Lee 7th (1:49.83).

Next was the 200 IM Kaimin Tsuei finished 2nd with a time of 2:10.12 and Emily Lee finishing 14th (2:23.63). Now it was the time for our first Individual Champion on the boys side, Kevin Vargas finished 1st breaking the CIF Div 4 record and our own DBHS record with a time of 1:49.26! The boys were not done scoring points for us in this event. Kevin Lee placed 5th (2:04.21) and Charlie Lin 14th (2:08.70).

For the 50 Free, Thea Gani finished 11th with a time of 25.93! Timothy Jia finished 3rd with at time of 21.79 and Brady Xie finished 11th (22.42).

The 100 fly was an exciting race as we had 3 Lady Brahmas in this event. Melanie Wu finished 3rd with a time of 58.47, followed by Valerie Chen finishing 5th (1:01.64)and Emily Lee 10th (1:01.08). Now it was Vincent’s turn at becoming an Individual Champion in the 100 f ly with a time of 49.46 setting a new Div 4 Meet record by .01 Seconds and a new DBHS team record! Logan Morales 7th (53.81) and Jason Matsuda 12th (55.32).

The 100 free was just as exciting with Kate Li finishing 2nd with a time of 51.38 breaking the old DBHS time of 51.90. Althea Gani placed 11th (56.45). Nathan Chow finished 2nd with a time of 46.40 breaking the old record of 46.64 from 2012! TImothy Jia 4th (48.06), followed closely by Brady Xie 5th (48.76).

Next up was the 500 Freestyles, one of my favorite events, Melanie Wu finished 3rd with a time of 5:22.72! Dylan Hou finished 3rd with a time of 4:35.19! Followed by Matthew Chai 4th (4:49.55), Jason Matsuda 6th (4:58.05) and Alex Hung 12th (5:03.84).

Next came the 200 Free relays and our girls needed to step and they did just that! With a 2nd place finish dropping 1.48 seconds from their time for a 1:42.98! Great job Althea Gani, Anastasia Gani, Nikki Yip and Kate Li! Our boys team of William Tan, Dylan Hou, Brady XIe and Timothy Jia finished 2nd with a time of 1:28.69.

Stick with me we have more excitement. Kaimin Tsuei wanted her Individual Champion title and she made it happen with a first place in the 100 back setting a new DBHS record with a time of 56.66! Vincent Cheng earned his second Individual Champion in the 100 Back as well with a time of 52.31! Aaron Tamura finished 4th (57.12), followed closely by Stephen Lee 5th (57.39) and Logan Morales 6th (57.85).

We had a good showing in the 100 breast with Valerie Chen placing 4th with a time of 1:08.40. Ashlyn Woo 9th (1:13.67) and Anastasia Gain 12th (1:13.40). Kevin Vargas continued his winning streak with the 100 breast finishing with a time of 56.44! Cyrus Phan 3rd (1:01.42), William Tan 5th (1:01.49) and Kevin Lee 7th (1:02.45).

With the 400 Free Relays finishing the meet our swimmers wanted everyone to know we were not done yet! Not one but both of our teams broke the Division 4 Meet record for this event! Our girls team of Kaimin Tsuei, Melanie We, Althea Gani and Kate Li dropped 4.68 seconds crushing the old record of 3:37.09 with a time of 3:34.39! Then our boys team of Dylan Hou, Kevin Vargas, Nathan Chow and Vincent Cheng dropped 7.29 seconds from their prelim time crushing the old record of 3:11.67 with a time of 3:07.14! Also setting a new DBHS Record!

We could not have done it without the help from our divers Mackenzie Kim finishing 2nd and Luke Huang finishing first on Tuesday! Final Scores Girls 302 points finishing 64 points ahead of 2nd place Marantha with 238 points! Boys with a CIF record of 574 finishing 381 points ahead of 2nd place Beaumont with 193 Points.

As is tradition the winning team goes in the water! Next up is states this week Friday and Saturday up in Clovsis Ca. We will be leaving on Thursday. Please congratulate any of the swimmers that you see on campus. They stepped it up as a team and I could not be more proud of them!
